Our working student program is vital for the projects and we need your dedicated hands to reach the children who most need our help!
Our program is currently enrolling - we take on 2 students at a time, apply now!
Working students live at our 4Volcanoes Lodge, a private villa that hosts guests from all over the world. You get a private apartment with bathroom and kitchen. You time is dedicated to horse training, assisting in lessons, doing research, grooming or feeding. If you are fluent in spanish you will work with local children and adults in therapy sessions. We have special needs clients and work with the children from the local orphanage. You will also work with traumatized horses and help them in their own recovery process.
Sometimes we will ask you to help out with guest services or with our own children, we will do trail rides with horses in training and might travel to other haciendas for teaching purpose.
Our mentor PhD Jenny Seham sharing fotos of the day.
The first days of your stay are dedicated to teach you about our method "Horse Guided Empowerment" and to give you all the tools you need to best serve our clients. We will have an introductory workshop, video analisis, hands-on training and you will choose a topic of your preference for research while you are with us.
You will work 5 days per week. We start at 7am, have a break during the hot noon hours and work for an average of 8 hours or more. There is just always something to do! On your free days you are encouraged to travel and explore the country.
Trail rides, jungle tours, beach trips - your name it!
The last days of your stay will be dedicated to finish your documentation, research and a video testimonial.
How to Enroll
First we ask you to fill in the application form - you will find more information about requirements there. We will select candidates and get back to you for a skype interview. There is no 1 perfect type of person we are looking for, but we would like to get to know you a little so we can put together a team of students whose different backgrounds will complement each other and allow for a more interesting collaborative experience.
Once you have been accepted into the program, you can start your fundraiser.
Playing with Horses will significantly raise a girls self esteem.
Expenses & Fundraising
The cost of the program on site is US$900 per month and working student. For this money your housing and two meals a day will be provided, the horses are fed, get veterinarian care and see the farrier, and our clients have a physical therapist, SPED and/or psychologist present in and supervising their sessions.
For the fundraiser you can put together a little website, or a facebook page to inform people. Our goal is to create awareness and support among the family and friends of our students! We also depend on widening our support group.
What works very well is asking your church group or the people at your barn! They will be interested in learning about Equine therapy for children.
Most of our clients have very limited monetary ressources, and pay as little as $1-$5 per session, or get them totally for free such as the kids at the orphanage. With your contribuition we actually pay sessions for our underprivileged clients.
You will need to calculate some extra cash for your weekend trips, favourite grocery items, personal higiene articles, etc.
